Deadline Approaches for Geek-a-Thon!

North Carolina IT Teachers:  Want to provide your students some hands-on, real world experience?  Do some good in the community?  Build your program's reputation?

QTL
is joining forces with Kramden Institute for the 2007 Geek-a-Thon.  We're looking for a dozen schools across the Tar Heel State to participate in a student computer refurbishing event on February 24. Students at participating schools will meet at their schools to upgrade donated computers, which will then be put in the hands of local students who don't have computers of their own. Kramden has standard processes to make it all run smoothly, and will send volunteers to participating sites to help with the process.

Sound like fun?  Sign up now: the deadline to let us know you would like to participate is Nov. 17!  Signup forms and complete rules and logistics are available on our website.  If you are interested in participating but can't get all the paperwork and approval done by the deadline, email us to let us know you want to take part.

Here's what you would need to do:

* Get approval from the appropriate administrators at your school.
* Fill out, sign and return the agreement form.
* Solicit computer donations from the community.  Minimum specs are listed in the Geek-a-Thon agreement document.  We would like each participating school to refurbish between 15 and 24 computers.
* Find a sponsor or raise money to fund software.  Kramden asks that participating schools raise $25 per computer to be refurbished.  Details are in the agreement document.
* Arrange your student teams and prepare for the big event.
* Alert the local media to let them know your students are part of this statewide event (we can help if you like).

Kramden has had impressive success putting computers into the homes of students in the Durham area.  If this statewide event proves successful spreading that good work to other communities, we hope to expand it to Arkansas and Mississippi in the future.  We hope you can take part!

Ubuntu Project Impresses Students

One of the most interesting parts of any QTL IT teachers' workshop is the opportunity to see what other teachers are doing.  At the October workshop in Asheville, NC, Watauga High School teacher Errol Shook impressed us all with an Ubuntu Linux/XGL install that might just be the coolest PC interface I've ever seen.  It takes the 3D look of Windows Vista one step farther with graphics and icons that literally dance on the screen.  So we asked Errol to share,  He had one of his students document the process in a Word document that we've posted under "Miscellaneous Shared Resources" in the QTL Professional Learning Community site.  Here's what he has to say:

"This document is only a general how-to. This is not a beginners project so be prepared for setbacks and re-installs. Check this link for even more information on getting started and some movies of what it looks like when finished. We use Ubuntu for our installations. You could also try openSUSE as well. This project changes daily and so do the WIKI's. You may also be interested in a similar project, AIGLX."

In fact, we've heard from another teacher, Greg Thoyre of Orange High, who installed the AIGLX process with a Fedora Core 6 install as documented here and says it is pretty cool.  Whichever you choose, Shook says it's a great, if potentially frustrating, project for students.

"Have fun with this one," he says. "Students love it when it is done."

What's on CompTIA's Revised A+ Exams?

As you probably know by now, CompTIA has revised its A+ certification exams.  The 2003 A+ exams will be available to anyone until the end of this calendar year, and to CompTIA members and their students or employees through June 30, 2007.  But anyone seeking certification may want to begin preparing for the new - and very different exams.

What's on those exams?  Webb High School teacher Rick Sheldahl took the plunge and sat for the exams last month.  He was impressed.  "NONE of my students will be taking the old tests regardless of our current curriculum," he says.  "The new tests are VERY good and, to me, significantly easier than the old tests (and I started my computer training immersed in DOS)."  Read the rest of Rick's post, and find a list of some question topics he shared, in the New A+ Exams course under the QTL Professional Learning Community Curriculum Forum.
