Industry Sites and Classroom Partnerships
CompTIA Authorized Academy Program
Industry certification is a tremendous tool for students seeking their first work experience, and ExplorNet's Computer Engineering resources are aligned with CompTIA's A+ certification for entry-level IT professionals. CompTIA has a terrific program for schools called the Authorized Academy Program. It's free to join, and makes discounted vouchers available for students immediately. Additional benefits kick in after the first few vouchers have been purchased. It's definitely worth the time to sign up and take advantage of what's available.
Microsoft Academic Alliance
Much of CET I and II II focuses on operating systems, specifically the different versions of Windows from Windows 2000 all the way through Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Some of the questions students will see on the post assessment and certainly the CompTIA certification exams focus on the differences between the operating system versions, their features, and the different ways to perform specific tasks. This is a key part of the curriculum, and necessitates exposure to all the different versions.
The Microsoft MSDNAA program makes this possible by providing access for students to all the different OS versions. Participating teachers have access to the operating systems and students can install and uninstall repeatedly without having to buy varying licenses.
Utilities for Teaching A+ Content
CPU-Z
Learn about the processor in the PC you're using, see how much RAM it has without opening the box. With this tool you can learn the core speed, bus speed and more. Illustrating these can help students tie together the concepts you're teaching about what happens inside the computer.
Sysinternals Security Utilities
This powerful suite of tools can root out threats to or violations of security (here's a list with descriptions). In addition to being useful tools to know about for troubleshooting purposes, some of them are great to use to illustrate computing and security concepts.
Process Explorer
This Windows Sysinternals utility takes the place of Windows Task Manager - providing much more detail. Use it to illustrate how processes are interwoven, how resources are used by the various processes happening inside the computer, and more.
Rootkit Revealer
This utility scans the computer looking for problems that might not be detected by anti-virus, spyware or other malware-detection programs.
